The Underground Painting Liberation Movement

The UPLM is a group of artists who come together over a mutual need to discuss the value of claiming the identity of “I am a painter” (even though not all the members actually employ brushes or paint in their work as of yet). Dedicated to… painting past and present, acts of painting, paint brushes big and small and all forms of pigment, the UPLM meets regularly to explore the potentiality of painting. Our interest is in painting arising from our engagement with the sensuous materiality of paint, the enigmatic flat plane of the canvas, the contemporariness of redundant means, and the possibilities posed by the unique relationship of the viewer to the painting. Our attraction to painting lies in part in that for us no art medium today raises so many problems for the artist, and raises in such an acute way the difficulty of making art. The informed, the uninformed and the ‘informe’ are all given space in our circle.

Feb 14th-March 14th: The UPLM has set up No 7 Garden Street as a temporary studio space where we can enjoy spending time painting together, meet to discuss painting matters and consciously notice the trembles in our brush strokes as the other side of the world goes through radical political changes. We will also host public events on each Saturday evening that we are in residence (check the blog site for details) and offer Foucault’s ‘Manet and the Object of Painting’ to the regular Garden Street seminar series.

Painting

Christos Christodoulopoulos and Eve Michelaki are among a group of painters currently working on a project at 7 Garden Street. They will also be leading the 3rd Reading Loop on Wednesday February 23rd, taking Foucault’s ‘Manet and the Object of Painting’ as a starting point for discussion.
